Korean Courses

Korean Courses in Regular Schools (Washington Metropolitan Area)

Currently, four schools offer Korean as a foreign language:

  • Fairfax Academy (Fairfax High School, VA)
  • Fairfax Online Campus (Fairfax High School, VA)
  • C.D. Hylton High School (Prince William County, VA)
  • New Hope Academy (MD)

Fairfax Academy

Fairfax Academy is located within Fairfax High School. Students from Fairfax County Public Schools may enroll in the program. Classes are offered in three sessions:

  • 1st Session: 7:30 – 9:00
  • 2nd Session: 9:30 – 11:00
  • 3rd Session: 12:55 – 14:05

School bus transportation is provided when available. Otherwise, students must arrange their own transportation.

New Hope Academy

New Hope Academy is a private K–12 school where Korean is required for students from kindergarten through 8th grade. In high school, Korean may be continued as an elective subject.

The Korean Language and Culture Center offers activities involving traditional Korean instruments, allowing students to learn both language and culture.

Colin Powell Elementary School

Since the 2012–2013 academic year, Colin Powell Elementary School has offered a Two-way Korean Immersion Program. Approximately half of the curriculum is taught in Korean, including Math and Science, while Social Studies is taught in English.

The program began at the kindergarten level and has expanded annually. By the 2015–2016 academic year, it had reached the 3rd grade and continues to expand.

After-School Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools offers after-school Korean programs in:

Eagle View, Colin Powell, Cub Run, Deer Park, Mosby Woods, Fairfax Villa, White Oaks

Montgomery County Public Schools offers Korean language and culture programs in:

Elementary Schools: Clarksburg, Spark M, Matsunaga, Wayside
Middle Schools: Rocky Hill, Herbert Hoover

Online Korean Classes (Fairfax County Public Schools)

Since the 2012–2013 academic year, Fairfax County Public Schools has offered accredited online Korean classes. These courses are available not only to FCPS students but also to learners across the United States.

Courses include Korean 1, 2, and 3. Upon completion, students may earn up to 3 credit hours. Students who pass placement exams may directly enroll in higher-level courses.

Korean 4 was introduced in the 2015–2016 academic year, allowing students to complete a full sequence of Korean language study.
